What to Expect During a Door Design Consultation
1. A Conversation About Your Home and Style
We’ll start by getting a sense of your property, whether it’s a 1930s semi, a Victorian terrace, or a modern home looking for a period touch. We’ll ask about:
- The age and style of your home
- Your preferences for glazing, timber type, and door colour
- Any inspiration images or references you’ve seen and loved
This is a relaxed conversation, it can happen over the phone or via email and it helps us build a clear picture of what you’re after.
2. A Discussion About Sizes, Frames & Layout
If you already have approximate measurements, great, if not, we can help you figure that out. We’ll also talk through:
- Whether you’ll need a new frame
- If you require additional glazing around your door if you have a fanlight or sidelights
The layout and symmetry of the doorway, especially important in period homes
3. Choosing the Right Glass
If you’ve chosen a design with glass, we’ll guide you through:
- Our stained glass design process
- How we can match a design you've seen elsewhere
- Or how we can create something entirely bespoke
We also offer plain and obscured glass options if you're after a simpler or more private look.
4. Timber Options and Finish
We typically work with two solid hardwoods:
- Solid Oak - classic and full of character
- Solid Sapele - a denser, more stable premium hardwood alternative
If you plan to paint your door, we can supply both the door and frame primed in white, ready for finishing in your chosen colour.
Prefer a natural look? We can also provide your door pre-oiled or unfinished, perfect if you'd like to apply your own finish and enjoy the satisfaction of completing it yourself.
A Quick Note on Design Process
Once all the key design decisions are made, we’ll prepare a full set of visuals so you can see exactly what your new front door will look like before we begin production.
This includes:
- Structural diagrams of the door and frame
- Scaled illustrations of any stained glass panels
- Glass swatches showing the colours and textures chosen by our designer
These visuals give you complete confidence in the final design. Nothing goes into production until you’ve reviewed and approved everything.
