How We Design and Make Traditional Stained Glass for Front Doors

Traditional handcrafted stained glass panel in a front door, adding colour and character to a home
At Morton Doors, stained glass isn’t just a decorative touch, it’s part of the soul of the door. Each panel is designed and handcrafted to bring character, colour, and individuality to your home. Whether you want to replicate a period design or create something entirely unique, our process combines traditional craftsmanship with modern precision.

1. Discussing Your Vision

Every stained glass panel begins with a conversation. Some customers come to us with a clear idea, while others are still exploring what suits their home. We’ll talk through your preferences; colours, motifs, and glass textures, and how they can complement the door style you’ve chosen.

We often find the best way to share ideas is through imagery. You can send us photos of stained glass designs you’ve seen and liked, or highlight certain details that appeal to you. From there, we’ll start shaping the vision into something personal to you and your property.

2. Creating a Scaled Design

Once we have a clear understanding of your preferred style, our designers produce a detailed illustration of your stained glass panels. This scaled drawing shows how the design will look within your chosen door, from proportions to pattern placement.

You’ll have the opportunity to review the design and request any adjustments. We’ll refine it until you’re completely happy. Production never begins until you’ve approved the final design.

3. Handcrafting the Glass

This is where the artistry truly comes to life. Each piece of coloured and textured glass is carefully cut, arranged, and leaded by hand. We use traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations, the same age-old methods used in period door making.

Every joint is soldered, then the panel is cemented for weatherproofing and durability before being cleaned and polished to bring out the richness of the glass. No two pieces are ever exactly the same, giving each door a subtle, handmade character.

4. Assembly and Finishing Touches

Your finished stained glass panel is securely built into the door at our workshop before delivery. For enhanced insulation and protection, we can double or triple glaze the panel while maintaining its timeless look: for double glazing, we add a 6mm clear sheet on the inside of the panel; for triple glazing, the panel is fully encased between two 6mm clear sheets.

We can also extend your stained glass design to the surrounding glass around the door, including side and fan lights for a complete, harmonious look.

When your door arrives, it’s ready to install beautifully crafted, made to measure, and completely unique to your home.

Bringing Colour and Character to Every Home

Whether you’re restoring a Victorian townhouse, enhancing an Edwardian property, or adding period charm with 1920s & 1930s front doors, our bespoke stained glass designs bring light and life to your doorway.

Each panel tells a story, one that begins with your ideas and ends with a handcrafted piece of glasswork that will be admired for decades.
